Few basic things which it's good to be able to do - recording, noise reduction, editing, mixing.
Nowadays you can do it on mobile apps. Audacity though, gives a more predictable result. It's also open-source, which means that we get a very high-quality piece of software for free and absolutely legally. Audacity performs on one level with big monsters like Steinberg's Wavelab, Cakewalk Sonar, Adobe Audition, WavePad, GoldWave or Ableton. In addition to that, it's all done very easily here - it is a fabulous application.
